Danh Vo and Kunsthalle Basel present:

Alain Resnais
Muriel ou le temps d’un retour, 1963
35mm, color, French with English subtitles, 117′

This rarely shown film of the French director Alain Resnais (geb. 1922) will be presented in connection to the exhibition Where the Lions Are by Danh Vo, opening on Wednesday, June 10, 2009, 7pm at Kunsthalle Basel.

Since the end of the fifties Resnais is considered to be one of the most notable representatives of the French author’s film. He became famous with films such as Hiroshima, mon amour (1959) or Letztes Jahr in Marienbad (1961).
Muriel ou le temps d’un retour connects the trauma and collective memory of France during the Algerian war with personal experiences in the history of three people: Hélène, an elderly antiquarian, her former lover, who suddenly shows up, and Hélène’s stepson, who is haunted by his past as a soldier in Algeria: the memory of Muriel.

With an introduction by Danh Vo.
